"Date Rape" Drugs - Introduction

A young woman got an invite to a private party in London on a Thursday night. By Saturday she had been released from hospital after she had been given a "date rape" drug and then assaulted at that party. Her drink had been "spiked" with GHB (GammaHydroxyButyrate) and as it is invisible when dissolved in liquid and has no smell, she would never have known about it until later.

This set of articles describes the two main drugs used, their effects, how to avoid getting your drink spiked, what to do if that happens and links to suppliers of date-rape drug detection kits.

There is a lobbying effort to try to get the law changed to make the clubs responsible if their customer's drinks get spiked, so if you have been affected by this, we would like to hear from you. Your details will be sent to Claudia Bryan and Peter Blue and will be kept confidential.

Some Recommendations

  1. Make clubs and bars responsible if their customer's drinks get spiked.

  2. Make drug detecting coasters, beer mats or kits available at clubs and bars.

  3. Allow customers to leave their drinks at the bar to avoid tampering.
